Socko in Morocco

Socko in Morocco Review

Socko in Morocco is a 1954 animated short film from the Woody Woodpecker series. It is a pretty crazy flick.

Woody Woodpecker is in the Foreign Legion, where he and his commander are guarding a dancing girl. A neighboring sheik wants her for his harem, and he kidnaps her. Woody goes to the sheik’s palace and finally frees her by disguising her to be as ugly as homemade sin. That final scene made this whole movie a treat. The girl’s ugly mask was hilarious and how the commander reacted to Woody kissing her was comedy gold.

The movie also benefits from a unique for the series emphasis on a foreign culture. The Arabian aesthetic not just in setting, but also in oriental animation was a delight. The flick is highly energetic and even deranged at times, which really worked and so did Woody’s amusing horniness. The first half still could have been stronger and funnier as the second half is where all the best moments come.

Socko in Morocco is a very good Woody Woodpecker cartoon that benefits from a unique setting well utilized and a hilarious ending.

My Rating – 3.9
