Sniffles Takes a Trip (1940)
Sniffles Takes a Trip Review
Sniffles Takes a Trip is a 1940 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very strong entry.
Sniffles the mouse takes a trip to the countryside. He is tired of life in the big city and he wants to take a rest and experience the wilderness for once. However, while at first it seems beautiful and endearing, eventually the forest becomes a very scary place for the little mouse and he runs back to the city. The plot is not particularly interesting or original of course and the film takes its time to get there, but when it does, it’s a blast to watch.
This is one of the most purely atmospheric and moody pictures from Warner Bros. so far. Sniffles is likable as our insecure, fearful hero and the animation truly is gorgeous to behold with spectacular color work, a polished feel to it and striking imagery. The atmosphere is creepy and the film feels very mysterious and dark. It reminded me wonderfully of that dark forest segment in Disney’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’.
Sniffles Takes a Trip is typical in storyline, but amazing in its animation which conveys the atmosphere and mood of the film superbly.
