Slap-Happy Pappy (1940)
Slap-Happy Pappy Review
Slap-Happy Pappy is a 1940 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a very typical entry.
A rooster who is a parody of a famous radio celebrity of its day wants a baby son but only gets daughters. He asks help form his friend who is a Bing Crosby parody who croons to his wife and gets all the baby sons out of her. Needless to say, this parody comedy is very much a product of its time and very timely as it must have been hilarious for its audience to make fun of Eddie Cantor, but not today I’m afraid as rare are people who know of him now.
I also found another Bing Crosby impersonation to be just way too much as we’ve had at least five of those by this point and they need to let go of him. However, the film is still solid in concept as having roosters and hens for this parody was a great choice with the amount of eggs and reproduction feeling like a machine factory. That was a good choice and the animation itself is very strong. The ending is also cute.
Slap-Happy Pappy is well animated and overall solid, but a typical parody short of its time which is way too timely for its own sake.
