Sister (2019)
Sister Review
Sister is a 2018 Chinese animated short film directed by Siqi Song that was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
A Chinese man thinks about his childhood with the sister he never had, and what it would have been like had he had a sibling. This film does explore the effects of one-child policy through a very moving imaginary journey. That last scene is particularly effective at conveying emotion, and what the Chinese people went through during this period in their history.
The movie is very weird, sometimes that weirdness was too much, but at times it was wonderful and very authentic. I found it predictable, but still its structure really worked for me as it made the ending more emotional. And I just loved the animation, the stop-motion was incredibly, very charming and the imaginary moments and fantastical elements were beautifully executed. It’s such an artistic endeavor.
Sister is beautifully animated, but also a very moving tackling of one-child policy and how it affected the Chinese people.
