The Goddess of Spring (1934)
The Goddess of Spring Review
The Goddess of Spring is a 1934 Disney animated short film and one of the better Silly Symphonies for sure.
The God of Hades comes and takes away the Goddess of Spring Persephone to the Underworld and winter immediately arrives in her absence. In the end, the two arrange that she returns, but to come back every six months and that is how the seasons were born. I loved that ending despite the fact that it wasn’t as properly explored. And the whole story, although slight, works for this type of film.
The operetta elements also worked as the songs are pretty good. The vocals are also terrific and the characters, although not memorable, are solid with the villain being the highlight. Let’s talk about that animation. This was the time when the Disney studio wanted to make realistic human characters and they mostly succeeded in it. The movements aren’t yet polished, but the animation and character design are strong and the overall film looks really good with great colors and a polished feel to it.
