Seasons of Giving Movie Review

Seasons of Giving is a 1999 direct-to-video animated musical film from Disneytoon Studios. It’s a rather weak flick.

This is simply not on the level of some other Pooh movies. ‘Pooh’s Grand Adventure’ this movie is not. That’s because it lacks that flick’s emotion and darkness with this one being simply too childish and not memorable at all.

It’s also disconnected in its various segments. They are only connected by a holiday setup and not much else really. The first segment is okay, but bland. The groundhog discussion is amusing and Rabbit is also good here, but otherwise this segment felt too small and too uneventful. Surprisingly, this movie features Rabbit very extensively, but unfortunately not to that character’s benefit as he is not all that well used here. But more on that in just a second.

The turkey segment is a bit better, but again it’s slight stuff. The message that holidays are about families and not food is good for kids, but then again this only reinforces the idea that the film is only for the smaller children and not anyone else really.

And the third segment is so odd. This strange story features a blue jay named Kessie. I have never seen this bird before anywhere in the Pooh movie canon, and now she suddenly appeared and I am supposed to accept her. But her character is weak and just annoying.

What is even more horrendous and perplexing here is her relationship with Rabbit. They implied that the two love each other, but not as friends, but romantically. Needless to say, this is so stupid. Having Rabbit get a bird girlfriend was ludicrous and it entirely destroyed this entire film for me.

Seasons of Giving is also not that greatly animated. It is sweet and cozy as is every Pooh flick really. The music is also solid for what it is, and the dialogue is okay. But the screenplay is quite mediocre.

Seasons of Giving is technically okay and it has its charming moments for sure. However, most of the stories here are forgettable and bland. The final one is also very strange as it introduced this blue bird named Kessie to the mix, and has Rabbit have a romance with her. The film uses Rabbit so perplexingly.

My Rating – 3
