Schitt’s Creek Season 4 Review
The fourth season of Schitt’s Creek is probably the best one up until this point. It’s another wonderful season full of great humor and heartfelt moments.

Dead Guy in Room 4 is a very funny episode with a fun premise. It’s also important for officially starting the relationship between David and Patrick, which is the emotional driving force of this season. Pregnancy Test is amusing in its titular subplot, but it’s much better in the second subplot where David wants to have some privacy with his boyfriend. I found the twist with Stevie still sleeping with Jake hilarious.
Asbestos Fest isn’t the most memorable episode of this bunch, but the part with David’s store being stolen from is very funny. I continue to find Alexis’ street smarts cool, and how she realized what’s going on here was great. Girls’ Night is very sweet when it comes to the subplot with Alexis as her relationship with Moira continues to improve in an endearing fashion. As for David having to learn to compromise, it was a terrific chance for Dan Levy to act the hell out of those scenes with the annoyed expressions on his face being priceless.
RIP Moira Rose is a Moira episode, so of course it was always going to be great. The online news that she died led to many hilarious reactions from her. Any episode centered on her past fame and her celebrity persona is bound to be immensely humorous. Open Mic finds Alexis helping Johnny and Stevie at the motel. Again, her level of confidence and street smarts is infectiously fun and funny.

But the heart of the episode lies in that final scene. Throughout the episode, David is fearful of Patrick’s upcoming singing live in front of everyone, but when we witness what a great signer he is, and how beautifully he ended up serenading him, that was probably the most romantic, most essential moment of their relationship so far, and it’s absolutely wonderful seeing a gay couple get this romantic, this lovely relationship on television.
The Barbecue continues Alexis’ pursuing of Ted in an awkward fashion, but the most important moment comes at the end when we get to know that Patrick was with a woman before and that she continued to text him without him telling David about it. Although overly fabricated as an issue, it led to that great (and also quite funny) argument scene that ended the episode in a very memorable fashion.
The Jazzaguy is fun in every subplot, but it is again at its best with David who continues to get the best material to work with. This, however, finally utilizes on his relationship with Stevie and the moment where two confess their friendship to one another was so emotionally rewarding. The Olive Branch works on so many levels. The singles event is memorable, Johnny buying Stevie make-up as a gift was hilarious, and of course David and Patrick finally reconciling was wonderful.
The best moment is at the end where finally David gives back to Patrick by being romantic himself. Him lip-syncing to Tina Turner’s The Best is instant classic territory right there. It’s not only playful and immensely romantic, but suitably very gay in the best way possible.

Baby Sprinkle is quite funny in the parents having to deal with some jealousy, but the highlight is Alexis basically walking away from a horrible past acquaintance from the city, thus reiterating again just how much she’s grown through the years. The Rollout is definitely fun, but far from particularly memorable or important. Singles Week is maybe a bit too emotional, but still the guys professing love to one another was so sweet, and Alexis and Ted getting back together was a necessary development. Merry Christmas, Johnny Rose is a cute, but too weird Christmas episode.
In the end, this season of Schitt’s Creek is the best one so far as the show has become confident by now in both moving its audience and utilizing its characters and their journeys remarkably well.
Worst Episodes: The Rollout and Merry Christmas, Johnny Rose.
Best Episodes: Open Mic and The Olive Branch.
My Rating – 4.3
