Saddle Silly (1941)
Saddle Silly Review
Saddle Silly is a 1941 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty weak flick.
This is another weak Merry Melody which relies so much on the audience’s established knowledge of politics etc. during the early forties, so obviously I was again rather lost when it comes to its gags. None of it was remotely funny to me and most gags I did not even get. I much prefer timeless comedies than timely satires.
Saddle Silly is actually superbly animated. There is no denying the strength of this very polished, realistic and overall admirable animation. The score is also quite good. So the films from this period are constantly getting better and better when it comes to the technicalities so it’s such a shame that in terms of writing, they continue being in a rut.
Saddle Silly is technically polished, but unfunny, overly timely in its jokes and overall weakly written.
