Room and Bird (1951)
Room and Bird Review
Room and Bird is a 1951 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a strong flick.
The action here is actually in the hotel where the pets’ owners brought them. Sylvester chases Tweety, but Hector is also up the cat’s tail. Eventually, a policeman arrives to evict the pets from the hotel. I found that third act very weird for better and for worse. It brought a lot of newfound excitement to the picture, but it also felt odd and disconnected from the rest of the cartoon.
The zoo part wasn’t great, but it paid off with that final Tweety line which was hilarious. I also really liked seeing all three organize to fool the policeman in one terrific scene. That scene in the mouth with that mouse from the 18th century was also very funny and original. The whole short is authentic in plot and setting, and also phenomenally animated.
Room and Bird has a weird ending, but a terrific final line. The plot and setting are so original here, and all three characters have great interactions.
