Reason and Emotion (1943)
Reason and Emotion Review
Reason and Emotion is a 1943 animated short film from Disney. It is a deserved Oscar nominee.
It is crazy to watch this movie and find out that Pixar basically ripped it off while making ‘Inside Out’ as the two are so damn similar. Here, through some visual gags and an intriguing premise, we are presented with a message against Hitler and his fear mongering. So yes, this is still an obvious WWII propaganda film with very excessive narration, but it still worked how original it is.
The premise where emotion and reason are two characters in one’s mind and constantly fighting for supremacy was excellent. It was hugely original back in its day, and it’s obviously very influential now. I found the animation truly outstanding, and the character designs terrific. I loved everything about those interactions inside the head and I wanted more of that.
Reason and Emotion is an obvious propaganda short which is heightened through amazing animation and a truly superb, influential story.
