Re-Animator Movie Review
Re-Animator is a 1985 horror comedy film directed by Stuart Gordon and starring a lesser-known cast of actors. It’s a very overrated movie in my opinion.

Neurotic scientist Dr. Pretorius finds a method to access a parallel universe of pleasure by exploiting the brain’s pineal gland. But he and his deputy are then attacked by horrifying creatures. I am not a fan of horror comedies from the eighties and this flick is no exception. You’d think that a movie based on a Lovecraft story would be more sophisticated, but you’d be sorely mistaken as this movie is anything but smart.
The movie isn’t really funny. It is much more successful in the horror department as the gore is extreme and some of the scenes are somewhat memorable, especially the creature ones, but the humorous elements failed to make me laugh or to entertain me properly. It’s all just way too silly for me, though I do understand why it’s a cult movie.
The characters are nothing to write home about, though a couple of them are amusing, including the scientist doctor character. The creature designs, the overall practical effects and the production design are all pretty good. The editing, most of the horror scenes and the atmosphere all worked, but the comedy was just subpar and the plot was very mediocre. It’s, thus, an overrated movie that really doesn’t deserve those great reviews that it received and that it continues to get to this day.
