Ranking Disney Princes

Ranking Disney Princes
Disney Princesses are an integral part of Disney movies, but they gotta have their princes too. Well, at least for the most part (looking at you, Moana and Brave). While they aren’t as important mostly, sometimes they can be almost as important as their female counterparts to the overall story and I find most of them quite underrated. So without further ado, here is my ranking of all eleven of them.
11. The Prince
Yes, the very first Disney Prince unfortunately gets the last spot. And that’s coming from me who’s a massive defender of the first Disney Princess movies. But even I have to admit that this prince is rather bland and forgettable with no personality to speak of. Again, I do still think that the movie is a major classic as he’s not that important to the story, but individually he’s weak.
10. Prince Charming
The second one was a definite improvement upon the first one, though still a very flawed individual. We get to see his father and he’s a wonderfully developed character, but Prince Charming himself is underutilized again and it’s a shame that they unfortunately used the filmed scenes of him for Sleeping Beauty and not Cinderella.
9. Prince Eric
I like Eric quite a bit actually. He is highly likable and solid overall. However, there is no denying that he’s the most underdeveloped character of the movie which is a classic filled with many great creations, but he unfortunately did not get much to do. I still loved his romance with Ariel, but individually speaking, maybe he should have gotten some more scenes.
8. Captain John Smith
I definitely like John Smith, despite him being maybe a bit too great of a man and unrealistically so. But his relationship with Pocahontas is wonderful and although both of them needed more characterization in their movie, he just might be better developed of the two as he’s got a bit more personality to him.
7. Captain Li Shang
I also really like Li Shang despite him landing this far down the list. That’s because from now on the list is going to become quite strong and competitive. He can be considered overly macho, but his song is easily the best Disney Prince song of all time and he’s undeniably cool. His romance with Mulan is rushed in the film, but still sweet.
6. Prince Phillip
By far the best of the early princes is taken by Sleeping Beauty’s Prince Phillip. He still did not get too much to do, but he’s got certainly more screen time than Aurora and is arguably more of a protagonist than she is. He’s very cool in his action scenes and a true archetypal hero plus him defying his father produced that classic line about the 14th century.
5. Kristoff
Undoubtedly the ugliest prince of this list is Frozen’s Kristoff. And that’s a positive for me as it was refreshing and more realistic to witness such a face. He was also refreshing for teaching Anna about what true love truly is and they actually fell for each much later on in the movie. Elsa doesn’t have a prince so far, but Anna’s certainly got herself an endearing guy.
4. Prince Naveen
Probably the most underrated character on this list also comes from the most underrated movie. Yes, Tiana is an amazing character for sure, but her significant other is also a wonderful creation. Prince Naveen’s self-reflecting journey is so well realized and I loved how he was the most flawed prince up to that point for Disney. Their romance is also superb.
3. Aladdin
Personally speaking, I find Aladdin overrated as a character. The movie is great and he is definitely a great character, but to me he’s a bit too arrogant and irritating for the majority of his screen time. But still, I cannot deny that he has a great story, well developed personality and a terrific relationship with Jasmine. He’s also the only character here who’s actually the protagonist of his movie which is interesting.
2. Flynn Rider
Flynn Rider (or Eugene which is his real name) is by far the best of the modern Disney Princes. Tangled is an all-around terrific flick and it’s in no small part thanks to the complex, modernized relationship between Flynn and Rapunzel. He also changed and became a better person, but he still remained cool, suave and a lot of fun. He’s by far the funniest and most entertaining prince that we’ve gotten so far. And also the most realistic.
1. Prince Adam
The Beast from Beauty and the Beast is in my opinion even better of a character than Belle who’s great herself, but he’s got a much more complicated personality. Their romance is lovely, but it wouldn’t work half as good had it not been for his extremely well done backstory and a change of heart which happened gradually and subtly. We do not get to see him in his human form much, but in his beast form he’s an iconic character and for that time a true groundbreaking one as he’s physically ugly whereas Gaston the handsome one is the villain.
You can get Beauty and the Beast on Amazon in this great package with terrific bonus features that are really worth the price alone. You can find other movies from this list on there as well.
