Purl (2019)
Purl Review
Purl is a 2019 animated short film and the first movie from Pixar’s program called SparkShorts.
Purl is all about gender inequality in a corporate workplace. It is relevant as Pixar’s answer to their own problem with shutting their female employees down and of course the whole fiasco with John Lasseter that happened the previous year. Although very obvious and aggressive in its message, this is still a good first step in this new program of theirs and I can’t wait to see more from it.
Purl looks terrific as the character design on the main character is very strong and she looks quite authentic. But the guys all look the same which was odd, but that’s probably the point here. The film looks polished and is well made across the board, but I just wanted more memorable scenes as all are good, but far from great or particularly emotional. The ending is nice and I liked how realistic the movie felt with the protagonist being very well realized.
Purl is aggressive and obvious, but still very polished in animation, memorable in its protagonist and overall effective in terms of storytelling.
