Popeye Meets Rip Van Winkle Review

 Popeye Meets Rip Van Winkle is a 1941 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is a flawed entry with some great moments in it.

I really do not care for these Popeye Meet shorts. This is of course better than ‘Popeye Meets William Tell‘, but it is still too disjointed in narrative and too odd and childish in its tone. The character itself is almost pointless too. However, I still liked the fight scene between Popeye and those dwarfs as it was interesting and pretty memorable.

Another great moment is the ending where Popeye wakes him up accidentally and the guy starts shooting him and the bullets hit the painting and the ship in it starts sinking. That was so funny and very inventive. The film has its moments, but is mostly pretty problematic and rarely as funny.

Popeye Meets Rip Van Winkle has a great fight near the end and a very inventive ending, but is otherwise a disjointed, forgettable affair.
