Puttin on the Act (1940)
Puttin on the Act Review
Puttin on the Act is a 1940 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is a very original, yet incredibly problematic short.
Popeye and Olive stumble upon a vaudeville add in the newspaper and they rush to get on with their act. But eventually they realize that they were too late as the ad is from the year 1898. That twist ending was absolutely hilarious and the entire premise here is really good. The humor here is definitely of its time, but watching Popeye make different faces was very amusing and that was a very nice gag.
But this is a very troublesome short mostly because the first half is very boring and nowhere near the quality of the second one. And seeing that Olive basically vanished later on instead of being together with Popeye on the show was just odd and a ridiculous mistake. This is an original entry, but a very odd one indeed and it is too flawed unfortunately.
Puttin on the Act is original and has a terrific twist ending, but it is too odd and sometimes very problematic.
