The Two-Alarm Fire (1934)
The Two-Alarm Fire Review
The Two-Alarm Fire is a 1934 Popeye the Sailor animated short film that is one of the best of its time without a doubt.
Popeye must firefight Olive’s house and save her while Bluto is there to make everything more difficult for him. And eventually he saves both of them and when Popeye makes sure that Bluto is okay, he punches him in the film’s climax. That is easily one of the finest endings in this series as it is so hilarious and quite original.
Popeye is so phenomenal here and while Olive isn’t as memorable, Bluto is great and I loved the arguments between the two which were so amusing and funny. The first half isn’t as good, but the second is great with the action that is so memorable and wonderfully inventive. I just love the physics-bending in Popeye the Sailor cartoons and this one has one of the better examples of that. It is such a great film and although not on the level of ‘Axe Me Another‘, it is still the second best entry in the series thus far.
The Two-Alarm Fire is wonderfully entertaining and so hilarious with a couple of really fun action set pieces and such a funny, superb finale.
