Plane Daffy (1944)
Plane Daffy Review
Plane Daffy is a 1944 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is quite a terrific cartoon.
Hatta Mari is a German seductress who successfully seduces one of the carrier pigeons and learns one of the military secrets from him. He supposedly kills himself and then it’s up to Daffy Duck to go and confront her. He manages to evade her for a while, but after having eaten the paper with the secret, he is X-Rayed and it’s shown that it says “Hitler is a stinker” on it. Hitler sees this, his two subordinates agree with that assessment and have to shoot themselves after his apparent anger.
That ending was absolutely hilarious. The note itself and the look on his face was already very funny, but their agreeing with it and then shooting themselves was downright perfect. I also loved the beginning with that pigeon as it was so well established how dangerous of a woman Mari is. She’s a memorable presence, but Daffy, though called a woman hater, still got turned on by her which was odd. Still, the animation is superb here as is the voice acting.
Plane Daffy is one of the rare WWII shorts that really works thanks to terrific humor, excellent characterization and a fabulous finale.
