Penny Dreadful Season 2 Movie Review
The second season of Penny Dreadful is another solid, but problematic season of this flawed, but intriguing show.

“I’m sorry you feel so unloved.
You are a beautiful monster,
and there are those who could love you and shall.
Life awaits you“

Yes, I did find this season also very flawed. That’s because the pacing is all over the place, but mostly just being very slow and not eventful enough. However, I genuinely liked those slower, dialogue-heavy episodes more than the action-oriented ones as I simply found the individual episodes and stories more intriguing than the overall arc that they set up here.
But overall, this season was an improvement upon the first one because it had more genuinely intriguing dialogue and characterization and character moments. I genuinely found fascinating some of its developments so let’s touch upon each of them.
First off, Dorian Gray. He continues to be an absolutely despicable human being, but that’s how he has always been in the novel, so I really like that approach which is just more modernized, but still retaining its essence. His relationship with Angelique is quite intriguing and I appreciated how respectfully they portrayed a transgender woman on this show, but he ended up killing her in what was a truly tragic sequence.
Sir Malcolm is zombified in this season which made him look stupid and dull, and I simply did not like Evelyn and I found her overly hyped and not a terribly interesting villain. But Lily is excellent for sure and her arc goes to some dark places and I loved her relationship with both the Creature and Victor.

Lyle got more to do in this season, but I still want more personal plot points with him. And I did really like the relationship between Ethan Chandler and Vanessa, though it took way too much screen time from other characters and plot points. Eva Green continues to be a treasure when it comes to this particular show as she’s amazing in her role.
In the end, the second season of Penny Dreadful still shares the same problems with its predecessor, but the dialogue, characterization and the overall plot are more intriguing this time around.
Worst Episodes: And Hell Itself My Only Foe and And They Were Enemies.
Best Episodes: Above the Vaulted Sky and Glorious Horrors.
