Orphan’s Benefit (1934)
Orphan’s Benefit Review
Orphan’s Benefit is a 1934 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a funny entry.
Mickey along with Donald organizes a benefit show for the orphan children. interestingly he embarrasses himself as he’s not funny whereas Donald absolutely steals the show. Yes, this is the first ever cartoon starring the two together and it just goes to show how stronger the duck is than the mouse. He appeared before in ‘The Wise Little Hen’ so this is his second screen appearance.
I found the film pretty good, but not great. Donald Duck’s design continues to bother me as it was initially rather unappealing. The short also needed better editing and a shorter runtime. But it still works because Donald Duck is incredibly funny with his signature hopping and running around angry as well as spouting nonsense. His voice is great and for once those orphan kids did not bother me and I liked how they tormented Donald in an amusing fashion.
Orphan’s Benefit has its flaws, but it is mostly a terrific first entry for the Mickey/Donald duo with the duck absolutely stealing the show from the beginning.
