On Ice (1935)
On Ice Review
On Ice is a 1935 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a very entertaining entry.
I do find these films underrated. Yes, the story ones are great, but the situational cartoons can be just as good. This one is definitely a situational comedy in a way. It revolves on ice and it follows Mickey teaching Minnie how to skate, Goofy trying to catch fish and Donald screwing with Pluto. It’s an interesting experiment where the three subplots are separated, but eventually coalesce together, and rather successfully I must add.
Goofy is sorely underutilized, though his fishing with smoke is interesting. Mickey and Minnie are cute, but also not overly used. The standout scenes are with Donald who makes fun of Pluto a bit harshly, but still hilariously. That mischief on ice with Pluto is very reminiscent to that classic ice scene in ‘Bambi’ and it’s the highlight of this cartoon. But the action ending is also very strong as is its wonderful animation.
On Ice closes out the year of 1935 for the Mickey Mouse series with a bang as the short is fun, funny, beautifully animated and very well crafted across the board.
