Ocean’s Thirteen Movie Review
Ocean’s Thirteen is a 2007 heist film directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. It’s a solid, but also very problematic movie.

First and foremost, this movie ranks in the middle when it comes to Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy. It’s obviously so much better than its slim predecessor, but it’s also evidently weaker than the original film. It’s an improvement and a solid, fun flick, but it could have been much better.
What I liked most about this film is that it’s very entertaining and funny. We got back to the roots of the first film here meaning that the action is solid, the pace is brisk and the character interactions are a lot of fun. The same goes for the humor which is excellent and there are a couple of sequences here that really work in terms of the comedy.
However, what I really disliked here is the overall forgettable heist once again and in particular weak storytelling as it’s pretty unimportant to follow through and you can basically just jump in at any second and you’ll be perfectly fine. And the biggest issue is the lack of female characters. Well, Ellen Barkin is there, but not for too much. The film needed more female characters and definitely it would have benefited from an inclusion of a romance.
But the characters remain excellent. Don Cheadle is expectedly amusing, but underutilized this time around unfortunately. Brad Pitt is cool and George Clooney is reliably suave, but Matt Damon actually steals the show here both in action, humor and screen time which was a nice change in pace from the previous installments where he was thoroughly underutilized.

Ocean’s Thirteen has some fun action, but most of it is forgettable. The film succeeds much more as a brisk, fun comedy than a heist flick, but that’s just my opinion. Soderbergh’s direction is solid, but far from great. The score is forgettable this time around, but the cinematography is reliably strong. For a third movie, it’s impressively solid, but definitely far from great.
Ocean’s Thirteen has its problems such as the action which is mostly forgettable and the lack of female characters which bothered me, but the interactions between the team are great per usual, the film is a lot of fun and it features some solid dialogue and humor. It’s weaker than the first movie, but definitely an improvement over its predecessor.
