Modern Family Season 9 Review
The ninth season of Modern Family is the weakest one so far. It has its strong episodes, but overall most are fairly inconsistent and far from hilarious.

“No, you made me feel bad about myself,
and I deserve better than that“

Lake Life is actually a strong premiere with Phil and Claire being quite fun whereas Mitchell stole the show here in terms of the humor in a very interesting subplot. The Long Goodbye is a very weak episode that only emphasizes how Manny’s college storyline during this season was downright forgettable and badly approached.
Catch of the Day is forgettable almost entirely and Sex, Lies and Kickball is both odd and mediocre with Alex’s relationship with Ben being all sorts of boring and unnecessary. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Phil Dunphy sounds great in title, but we never get to see this Halloween-themed episode properly take off. Ten Years Later is also not all that great. This season truly started off on a wrong foot.
Winner Winner Turkey Dinner is finally a good episode that highlights the family’s insistence on having accomplished something when in reality they all failed to hilarious results. Brushes with Celebrity would have worked better had they gotten more famous people.

Tough Love is at its best when dealing with Phil’s day in the wilderness. No Small Feet is very odd and creepy in the kids’ subplot, but I liked the one with Claire and Jay. Those two had a strong relationship throughout this season and I really liked those business episodes.
He Said, She Shed is forgettable, Dear Beloved Family is been there, done that and In Your Head is actually kind of wonderful in Jay’s storyline where his old rival passed away. I find Haley’s new genius boyfriend boring though, and Haley is ridiculously shortchanged this season.
Written in the Stars is fun in the romance-related subplots, but otherwise not all that great. Spanks for the Memories is at its best when dealing with Jay and Gloria’s sex life. Wine Weekend is the best kind of situational comedy that is outlandish, but amusing in all of its subplots. Royal Visit is the best when Phil and Claire compete in intelligence.

Daddy Issues should have hit harder on Lily not having a mother issue. And speaking of her, she was so brushed aside throughout this season. Mitch and Cam are not only terrible parents, but they might be even worse as partners. CHiPs is actually quite entertaining with the finest story being with the two competing in the coolness factor. Mother! is a good familial episode with a great emphasis on Dede’s role in the family. The Escape may be too mean-spirited for some, but it worked for me as I like those kinds of episodes a lot. Clash of Swords is too silly and nerdy for a strong finale.
Overall, it’s a weak season which definitely has some solid episodes, but most of them are quite forgettable and not all that funny. Mitch and Cam argue too much, Phil and Claire are fine but too familiar by now whereas Jay and Gloria are both too weird with Manny. The kids are all so terrible.
Worst Episodes: The Long Goodbye, Sex, Lies and Kickball and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Phil Dunphy.
Best Episodes: Winner Winner Turkey Dinner, Wine Weekend and Mother!
