Mickey’s Pal Pluto (1933)
Mickey’s Pal Pluto Review
Mickey’s Pal Pluto is a 1933 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a very good entry.
Pluto saves a bunch of kittens, but later grows increasingly jealous after the two mice treat them as family. His moral dilemma is the most powerful part of this film and the first true, great role for him as this is his first starring and complex role. Mickey and Minnie are okay and kittens are cute but forgettable. This is all Pluto’s show and he is marvelous in it. The ending is particularly emotionally rewarding.
The film is very well animated and a rare, character-driven film for 1933 and thus one of the most serious Mickey Mouse entries so far. The problem here, however, is that Disney would make a 1941 color remake of this movie called ‘Lend a Paw’ which would go on to win an Oscar and is arguably a much better crafted movie than this original one.
Mickey’s Pal Pluto is definitely an important character-driven drama starring Pluto, but the remake trumps this one for me.
