Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)
Mickey’s Christmas Carol Review
Mickey’s Christmas Carol is a 1983 Mickey Mouse featurette. It is deservedly revered as a classic.
This is yet another adaptation of the famous titular story and I’ve had my fill with these particular adaptations, but this one is so great and so wonderful that I loved it despite those obstacles. The movie adapts the story well, but it’s also an excuse to shower the film with popular, classic Disney characters from yesteryear and that made it a truly nostalgic, beautiful watch. Of course Scrooge McDuck is a perfect fit for Ebenezer Scrooge and he’s great in the role, but I personally wanted more Mickey here as he’s quite underused.
The film starts slowly, but the second and third act are just majestic. I particularly found the ghosts section superb and perfectly realized and cast. Seeing Jiminy Cricket was so great and he’s wonderful, Willie the Giant from ‘Fun and Fancy Free’ is also here which was awesome and of course Pete is memorably creepy in the last segment. The characters from ‘The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad’ are also here, but Donald and Daisy needed more screen time. But Goofy is absolutely hilarious in the short scene that he got and he stole the show for sure. The film’s also wonderfully scored and superbly animated and very polished.
Mickey’s Christmas Carol has its smaller issues, but it’s a classic nonetheless. It’s gorgeously animated and sweet while being filled with many classic Disney characters.
