Mickey’s Amateurs (1937)
Mickey’s Amateurs Review
Mickey’s Amateurs is a 1937 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a pretty standard procedure.
And by that I mean that the flick feels three years old as those from 1934 in particular felt like this one. It’s still well executed, but not as hilarious unfortunately and not as fun. So the show is organized and various characters get to perform to varying results. I found Mickey underused here as he’s just the straight man, but Goofy is a lot of fun and both Clarabelle Cow and Clara Cluck got some great moments here and there.
Donald Duck expectedly steals the show once again. He was so funny with that rifle and that was honestly rather a dark scene for an early Disney flick. But the standout moment is the blackout iris ending closing in on him and strangling him. That was a rare, phenomenal instance of Disney breaking the fourth wall. I also liked the animation here.
Mickey’s Amateurs is uninspired in plot and overly traditional in approach, but it’s well animated, solidly entertaining and with a terrific, original ending.
