Men in Black: International is a 2019 sci-fi action comedy film directed by F. Cary Gray and starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. It’s a passable diversion.

Men in Black: International Movie Review

This is the fourth film in the Men in Black franchise with a significant year-gap from the release of the last installment. And it was supposed to resurrect the franchise given the new cast and everything, but they failed to earn much at the box-office and the reviews were quite mixed, even more leaning to the negative side.

And I somewhat agree, though I find it to be passable and okay as blockbuster summer entertainment, but the lack of energy or true excitement to it was noticeable. The flick felt like it was supposed to be new and refreshing, but it ended up being entirely the same in tone and feel as the rest of the franchise which really bothered me.

But, there is no denying the power of the chemistry between its leads as all of their scenes together are the highlights of the film. Chris Hemsworth is excellent as Agent H, very funny and highly likable. And Tessa Thompson is wonderful as Agent M and very memorable in the role. Both are great and both deserved much better material than what they received here.

The rest of the characters aren’t all that great with the exception of Emma Thompson who’s memorable in her smaller role. But Liam Neeson’s villain was obvious and very unfortunate. As for the aliens, I did not care for most of them, excluding of course Pawny, voice acted by Kumail Nanjiani. He was so endearing and I really dug his interactions with the main duo.

Men in Black: International Movie Review

Men in Black: International has solid special effects, but very weak and underwhelming action sequences. It’s also overlong and it goes through the motions in terms of storytelling. The dialogue and humor are solid, but everything else should have been much better. It’s thus the weakest entry in the entire franchise undoubtedly and that development was a shame as it had the potential for bigger things.

Men in Black: International has two terrific, charismatic turns in the main roles from Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. It’s also somewhat fun and amusing. However, the plot is just going through the motions, the action is weak and the movie failed to differentiate itself from the previous entries in the franchise leading to what is just a passable blockbuster diversion.

My Rating – 3
