Malibu Beach Party (1940)
Malibu Beach Party Review
Malibu Beach Party is a 1940 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very limited appeal entry.
Yes, this one short is not for me. I do know my actors and thus those parody shorts always entertain me, but I do not know radio personalities and singers enough for me to really get any of these jokes. Jack Benny, Deanna Durbin etc. are all names I certainly know, but I do not know enough about them to get any of their catchphrases. Thus the film has a very limited appeal.
I liked some of the gags, though. I particularly liked the beach gag and of course the ‘Goodbye Mr. Chips’ gag which I understood as I’ve seen the film. The parts with Winchester are also amusing. There are some amusing moments here, but not enough. And the animation was particularly weak this time around with an unpolished feel to it and particularly uninspired character designs.
Malibu Beach Party certainly has its amusing moments, but it’s mostly too narrow in its appeal and not for everyone as it was overly timely.
