Lost in Space Season 1 Review

Lost in Space is a 2018 science fiction television series which is a remake of the 1965 eponymous show. It is a solid, but highly flawed show.

Lost in Space Season 1 Review

…………………………………………………..

The first season came out in 2018 and it consists of ten episodes. Because all episodes are connected and this is one season that acts as one giant film, I am thus going to comment on the entire story and each character instead of tackling it episode by episode. So here we go.

I found the premise of a family surviving in space excellent and admittedly the first couple of episodes instantly hooked me in as I found the tension real and riveting and the world building quite stellar. But everything went downhill afterwards when they introduced sappy melodramas and too much action and going in circles as many episodes do not give too many real plot progressions.

The family interactions are solid here and I did find them to be a good team. However, I also found it incredibly unrealistic that the kids are these highly intelligent scientists and brave too. I am tired of presenting children as adults in the media and that needs to stop as soon as possible.

So Will is the only one who reminded me of a kid at least in some episodes and I loved his connection with the robot who is admittedly underutilized, but memorable and well designed. Judy and Penny aren’t all that memorable and both can be quite annoying at times. Don is too arrogant for my liking and John and Maureen are a memorable, strong married couple, but I found her treatment of him pretty abysmal at times.

And then there’s Dr. Smith. What is there yet to say about her that hasn’t already been said? She’s a competent, highly capable villain for sure. But her one-note character and the others’  terrible naivety when it comes to her actions really got on my nerves as it was obvious and extended beyond any reasonable runtime.

I did find that scene where John “died” tragic, but eventually he survived so the impact was blunted. The first half of the season is pretty good and intriguing, but the second one relied too much on action and not well written human interactions instead of adventure and survival. It is well acted and very well shot with great effects, but underutilized in many ways.

In the end, the first season of Lost in Space is a solid, but disappointing one which starts off great and is intriguing and with memorable world building, but eventually it resorts to too much melodrama and relying a lot on its one-note villain.

Worst Episodes: Infestation and Transmission.

Best Episodes: Impact and Trajectory.

My Rating – 3.6
