Freddy the Freshman (1932)
Freddy the Freshman Review
Freddy the Freshman is a 1932 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is an okay short.
We follow Freddy who crashes a college pep rally and proceeds to become the star of the campus football game. It is a dated short due to its depiction of college of course, but it has its moments. I liked the football game and the film’s score is particularly strong and fun. The editing is also quite good.
But I would have liked to have seen more from its second half than its plot in the weak and quite boring honestly first half. Nothing there interested me and I have to say that once again the new characters are forgettable. The Merry Melodies really struggled these days at depicting new and interesting characters and for the time being, this format with no recurring characters doesn’t really work.
Freddy the Freshman has its moments, but is mostly another forgettable Merry Melody.
