Late Afternoon (2018)
Late Afternoon Review
Late Afternoon is a 2018 Irish animated short film by Cartoon Saloon. It was nominated for an Oscar.
This short is about an elderly woman reminiscing about her past, her relationship with her daughter and how much fun she used to have as a younger woman and as a child. To me the daughter’s part was a bit weaker, but nonetheless the entire movie is a very emotional experience. It’s such a poignant movie that should be relatable for every older person out there, but to me it was relatable in the activities showcased and I could see myself in her shoes when I grow old easily.
Forest walk, snorkeling and of course bike riding are some of my absolute favorite activities and of course those moments had the biggest emotional impact on me, but the entire movie is honestly incredibly moving. The old woman is wonderful and I just adored the film’s score and especially its animation which is immensely artistic in its movements, scene transitions and a lot of imagery, especially the water. It’s an expectedly strong outing from the studio.
Late Afternoon is the best of the nominated animated shorts of 2018 with artistic animation, great score and such a moving story.
