Kitbull (2019)
Kitbull Review
Kitbull is a 2019 animated short film and the third movie from Pixar’s program called SparkShorts.
The film follows an abandoned stray kitten who forms an unlikely friendship with an abused pit bull. Now the movie obviously has a happy ending and it’s overall rather safe and overly emotional in its approach, but still there is no denying its power in a couple of heartbreaking or heartwarming sequences. I particularly liked how the movie explored the abuse of dogs through a couple of devastating moments.
Kitbull truly is moving in the dog character and I rooted for him throughout, but the standout is the little kitten who’s so feisty, independent and adorable that she steals the show for sure. Their friendship is sweet and their interactions are truly wonderful. I also liked the film’s pacing, score and a lack of dialogue. The standout aspect here is its animation which, for the first time in Pixar’s history, is actually hand-drawn and it’s wonderful. I loved the exaggerated, cartoony portrayal of the cat and the entire look of the film is charmingly old-fashioned and lively.
Kitbull is a standard animal friendship tale meant to move the audiences to tears, but it’s so wonderfully done and elevated by amazing animation and terrific characterization.
