Inside Job Season 1 Review
Inside Job is a 2021 adult animated science fiction comedy series that premiered its first season on Netflix in 2021. It’s a solid show that’s far from great, but it’s quite entertaining.

Set in a world where conspiracy theories are real for the most part, the show is centered on government politics, but it’s by far at its best when it’s dealing with interpersonal relationships and the workplace comedy staples. The political elements are so-so because the show doesn’t really tackle the issue of these theories in any decided manner. But the dynamic between all the characters is excellent and the series reached very good material when they were interacting and making fun of each other.
Lizzy Caplan’s Reagan is fantastic. She is the main reason to watch this show. A brilliant, but socially awkward scientist, her dynamic with her potential love interests was always hilariously cringey and her friendships are very well realized as was her fraught relationship with her problematic father. The latter was the emotional flux of the first season.
Other characters are much weaker, though some of them can be funny with the mushroom-like creature and the human-dolphin hybrid stealing the show comedy-wise. The humor is hit-or-miss actually. Some of it is quite funny, but again the political scenes did not feel as funny as the characters’ dynamics. The show is wildly uneven as it failed to properly connect those two in each and every episode. The animation s also just solid without ever being particularly great, though being made by the creators of ‘Gravity Falls’ and ‘Rick and Morty’ was interesting as both influences can easily be spotted here.

Unpresidented is an unfocused, unsure debut episode that doesn’t really hype you for the show in any shape or form. Clone Gunman is solid and at its best when focusing on Reagan’s insecurities. Her complex personality is by far the series’ biggest accomplishment. Blue Bloods is one of the best episodes of the season as this is where Reagan was particularly amusing with her robotic arm invention and her awkward human interactions.
Sex Machina continues that exploration of her awkwardness by delving into her love life or lack of such. The results are very funny and a great example that this show is just much better off without all the political stuff. The Brettfast Club makes fun of 80s nostalgia by focusing on it extensively, thus feeling hypocritical. My Big Flat Earth Wedding is forgettable while Ghost Protocol is another season highlight that proves just how sociopathic Reagan really is. Her plan here to ditch her boyfriend was hilariously ridiculous and just plain wrong. Buzzkill is set on the Moon, but it’s all about exploring the fraught father-daughter relationship. It’s very moving. Mole Hunt and Part Reagan closed off the season on an overly suspenseful note, though the final moment is intriguing.

Overall, the first season of Inside Job is pretty solid. The political elements did not quite work and the humor can be hit-or-miss, but whenever the show focused on its characters and their complex relationships, it was a blast to watch. Hopefully, the next seasons will focus on the latter even more. For now, this is a promising beginning for a new Netflix animated series that just might become great in the future.
Worst Episodes: Unpresidented and My Big Flat Earth Wedding.
Best Episodes: Blue Bloods, Sex Machina and Ghost Protocol.
