They don’t even notice me.

I smell like nothing to them

A scientist at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin is persuaded to participate in a study to get funding for her research. For three weeks, she must live with a humanoid robot designed to be the perfect life partner for her. First and foremost, this movie is far from original. When it comes to the themes of love and artificial intelligence, 2013’s ‘Her’ did it before and it did it better. Still though, this movie deserves a place in this genre as a strong work on its own as it’s both clever and very sweet.

What I loved about the film the most is how it deals so effectively with the potential future relationship between a human and an A.I. being. It doesn’t criticize nor does it endorse it too much. It portrays both sides of this potential relationship and that clear-eyed viewpoint was essential in making the movie quite smart and believable.

Some may find the movie’s tone problematic, but I personally found it very diverse in a great, refreshing manner. There are so many stretches where the film is pretty much a moving, even heartbreaking, serious drama, but there are certain sections where it veers not just into sweet romance, but genuine romantic comedy vibes. I loved both of these elements equally. Life itself contains both, so movies should strive to depict them altogether as well.

My favorite moment was the one with the deer. They are not scared of Tom as they cannot hear nor smell him due to him being artificial. That was a great touch that really stuck out to me in a script that was so sophisticated and well written that it contained many of these believable, realistic scenarios within this narrative that I wouldn’t think of myself before actually witnessing it on the screen. It is one of the best screenplays of the year by far.

Alma’s frustration with her relationship and her indecisiveness was also quite plausible and very touching. Maren Eggert is excellent in the role that is very written with the character never coming across as too cruel to the robot, but simply real. As for Dan Stevens, I was quite surprised to find out that not only does he know German as he apparently learned it in school, but he also felt so perfectly cast as the robot that I could not imagine anyone else in the role.

As the thriller movie ‘The Guest’ showcased back in 2014, he is very believable in these cold, almost inhuman roles, which is probably the reason why he got this gig. I loved Tom as a whole. The movie’s depiction of robots as perfectly believable humanoid androids that are on the way to get some human rights was very interesting and the sequence where the other woman is revealed to have been a robot all along was a terrific twist.

I’m Your Man could have done even more with its excellent premise as it focuses way too heavily on just these two characters, resulting in a rather limited scope. The movie’s two distinctly different halves also did seem a bit too uneven, but I did love both and I found the editing, score and directing all rather stellar. It’s quite an underrated flick.

I’m Your Man is far from original as it is very reminiscent to 2013’s Her in particular. Still, this SF romance features a phenomenal, well thought out screenplay, excellent acting and a clear-eyed treatment of its central theme. It contains a lot of wonderful and even witty moments with strong rom-com vibes, but also many truly serious, touching dramatic scenes. That tonal diversity is its biggest strength.

My Rating – 4.5
