I’m No Longer Here Movie Review
I’m No Longer Here (Ya no estoy aqui) is a 2020 Mexican drama film directed by Fernando Frias de la Parra and starring Juan Daniel Garcia Trevino. It’s a very odd movie.
After a misunderstanding with a local cartel, a young man is forced to leave behind his family, friends and everything he loves. This is a very specific movie for better and for worse. Focusing on the slums of Monterrey, gangs and the counter-culture of Kolombia, the movie is at first difficult to grasp. Eventually, they do a better job of explaining this culture and their way of living, but still the movie is far from relatable to general audiences.

Juan Daniel Garcia Trevino is highly memorable as the protagonist Ulises Sampiero. His baggy clothes, unique haircut and his overall look were different and interesting, thus the movie was believable in that regard as the actor looked the part that he was playing. But other characters are much less memorable with the whole subplot with the Asians feeling very rushed and at the end of the day unnecessary really.
I’m No Longer Here is well shot, it looks interesting and it is also a unique movie in its mixture of crime and musical elements, but still that mix wasn’t the most successful in my opinion. The movie’s editing is also problematic as it jumps trough time in the far from smooth manner. Overall, the movie was too strange and overly limited in its appeal, thus I respect it more than I like it.
