If Anything Happens I Still Love You (2020)
If Anything Happens I Still Love You Review
If Anything Happens I Still Love You is a 2020 animated short film from Netflix. It’s such a heartbreaking flick about loss.
Two parents grieve over their lost daughter. She was killed in a school shooting and now they grow apart due to their suffering. Eventually, their shadows reunite them together through flashbacks of their whole life with their kid together. This is incredibly sad first and foremost. It’s the type of emotion that even trumps Pixar, thus it can feel a bit too much and overly manipulative, but for the most part I loved it.
That scene at the school was disturbing and so sad. Every flashback worked for me as they were imbued with a lot of nostalgia and charm while the present scenes were tragic and painful to watch. The score is lovely, the direction is strong and the movie is longer for a short movie, but very involving and effective at making viewers care for these characters. The animation is amazing, in particular as it relates to the use of color. Everything here is black and white, but the child’s clothes and toys are in color. A very inspired choice.
