I Love Lucy Season 6 Review
The sixth season of I Love Lucy continued the trend of great episodes outweighing the subpar ones. It capped off the entire show in a very satisfactory manner.

“After marrying Fred, nothing could scare me!“

Lucy and Bob Hope is only okay. I am not all that familiar with this celebrity. He was fine here, but the overall sports-oriented storyline was uninteresting to me. Little Ricky Learns to Play the Drums threatened the friendship between the two families and the boy is so cute here. This is a rare sitcom child that is actually used sparingly, thus never becoming too annoying.
Lucy Meets Orson Welles is another celebrity-heavy episode, but this one features the amusing Welles at the top of his game. Some of his lines here were so funny and his dynamic with Lucille Ball was effortlessly fun. Little Ricky Gets Stage Fright is utterly forgettable, but Visitor from Italy is a very funny episode featuring this goofy man and his hijinks with the Ricardos.
Off to Florida is a solid, though not amazing situational comedy, but Deep-Sea Fishing was hysterical in the rivalry between the women and the men. The fish gag worked and was funny in every scene. Desert Island is suitably quite adventurous and this season continued the epic streak from its predecessors that saw the two families actually go other locations.

That brings me to The Ricardos Visit Cuba. I adore this episode. It was wonderful finally seeing the entire family of Ricky’s and they were all a lot of fun. Lucy’s inevitable shenanigans while trying to impress them was structured perfectly, erupting in a lot of laughter and eventually an emotional embrace. My only issue is that we only got one episode in Havana.
Little Ricky’s School Pageant is also forgettable and I like the boy in the other storylines beside these competition ones. I Love Lucy Christmas Show is a filler episode that has a fun holiday spirit, but it mostly consists of unnecessary flashbacks. Lucy and the Loving Cup represents the best of Ball’s prowess at physical humor. Her head getting stuck in this cup constituted instantly unforgettable imagery.
Lucy and Superman was particularly funny in that famous line about this iconic character. The fact that they made fun of it even back then was interesting to me. Little Ricky Gets a Dog introduced Fred to the house and I loved this inclusion. As a dog owner myself, I am always happy to see them represented in these sitcoms. This episode is particularly heartwarming in the scenes where the dog wants to sleep in their bed.

Lucy Wants to Move to the Country and Lucy Hates to Leave are these very important episodes that set up the Ricardos leaving for the country. This was a huge change for them and it wasn’t shown as a light decision thankfully. I loved seeing the positive portrayal of country life. Lucy Misses the Mertzes brings Fred and Ethel to the country as well. This is such a beautiful episode that signifies the eternal bond between the two couples. It is also quite funny with the final sequence being hilarious in their classic misunderstanding.
Lucy Gets Chummy with the Neighbors introduced Betty Ramsey to the series and she turned out to be one of the most memorable side characters on a show that hasn’t got that many of them. Lucy Raises Chickens is so funny and cute in the imagery of these chicks running around the house freely. Lucy Does the Tango is your standard dancing episode that’s not that interesting. The same goes for Ragtime Band.
Lucy’s Night in Town is forgettable, but Housewarming is so great at emphasizing the friendship between Lucy and Ethel and just how jealous they become when another friend comes into the picture. Building a B-B-Q is fun in its physical gags while Country Club Dance is one of the best episodes focusing on the girls trying to attract their husbands. The tight dress scene was so funny. Lucy Raises Tulips is fun and charming while the finale The Ricardos Dedicate a Statue has a hilarious final sequence and it also benefits from a terrific emphasis on the cute dog.

Overall, the sixth season of I Love Lucy is terrific. It has its clunkers, but most of the episodes were excellent and some were absolutely iconic. The MVPs here were Lucy, Ethel and the introduced dog while the new locations also made this season fresh. It was a great conclusion for the overall show and I will undoubtedly miss watching this wonderful sitcom every morning.
