Hyde and Go Tweet (1960)
Hyde and Go Tweet Review
Hyde and Go Tweet is a 1960 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a classic entry in this series.
In this short, Tweety gets inside a bottle of Dr. Jekyll’s potion, which makes him stronger and larger. Then, Sylvester chases the bird when he reverts to the small form and escapes when he transforms into his evil form. This chase continues through most of the short and it was brilliantly executed. There were so many moments here where the filmmakers cleverly utilized this idea, the best of such bits being the air sequence that was hilarious throughout.
I would have gone with a different ending as “it was all just a dream” twist conclusion is never particularly satisfactory to me. With that being said, the final line was funny undoubtedly. The animation in the film is phenomenal and the character design of Tweety’s evil form was unexpectedly accomplished and unforgettable. It’s a shame that they never went back to this creation, though this cartoon was adapted in the underrated platform video game ‘Sylvester and Tweety in Cagey Capers’.
Hyde and Go Tweet is one of the best Sylvester and Tweety cartoons due to stellar animation, great humor and a superb premise beautifully executed.
My Rating – 4.5
