Horton Hatches the Egg (1942)
Horton Hatches the Egg Review
Horton Hatches the Egg is a 1942 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very strong, lovely cartoon.
This is a famous Dr. Seuss story so obviously it’s a wonderful plot and faithfully adapted as well. I did find those hunters somewhat unnecessary in the bigger scope of things, but still they aren’t bad. Mayzie the bird is hilarious and Horton himself is such an endearing soul. His constant repeated line about faithfulness is so cute and the most memorable part of the entire film.
The film flows really well despite being ten minutes long which is by far the longest of all Warner Bros. shorts. That’s because there is not a single scene here that is wasted or dull as all serve at least some purpose and are highly entertaining. The narration here actually felt appropriate given the source material and the colorful animation is a treat for the eyes.
Horton Hatches the Egg is one of the better Merry Melodies so far as it adapts its story so well owing to great characterization and charming animation.
