Haredevil Hare (1948)
Haredevil Hare Review
Haredevil Hare is a 1948 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a terrific short.
Bugs Bunny is sent to Moon where he encounters Marvin the Martian who wants to blow up Earth. Eventually he blows up Moon to a crescent state. That ending was so funny and clever. I loved the overall plot and how different it all seemed from the rest of the series. This is the first short in the series to introduce space and it’s excellent. The animation is strikingly polished and beautiful to behold.
This is the first ever appearance of Marvin the Martian and I love this classic guy. He speaks in a memorable manner and his look is instantly iconic. He’s very mysterious and a lot of fun, bringing to mind Mynah bird for me. His dog K-9 is also introduced here and he’s also very amusing. The only problem I’ve had with this film is Bugs’ role in it. He’s good and he’s got some great lines here, but he simply does not fit a story where he loses in my opinion.
Haredevil Hare has a problematic use of Bugs in it, but it introduced Marvin the Martian splendidly. The storytelling is new and interesting, and the animation is wonderful.
