Hare Trigger (1945)
Hare Trigger Review
Hare Trigger is a 1945 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very strong first entry for the character.
Yes, this is the very first appearance of Yosemite Sam. And he’s so great. He is so different from Elmer Fudd and for the better. He’s smarter and pretty much acts as a villain, but he’s also hilarious in his short stature, redneck talk and interactions with Bugs who also excelled here and made fun of him gloriously.
The movie itself has its problems in the later two acts as not all gags or scenes are stellar, but most of them are with the highlights being his introduction to Bugs and especially that funny ending which parodied 1940s movie trailers and previews in such a funny fashion. I loved the animation here and especially that score which is so terrific in its western feel.
Hare Trigger has its flaws, but the score is great, the action and humor are superb and the short features a terrific debut for Yosemite Sam.
