Halloween is a 2007 slasher film directed by Rob Zombie and starring Malcolm McDowell. It’s actually a solid remake which caught me by surprise.

This movie is actually a remake just in its second half where it literally copies most of the original film with some adjustments and changes here and there. But the first half is all new and all original. It basically acts as an origin story for Michael Myers as it portrays him as a kid and how he became such a merciless killer. We get to know his family and the events prior to his kills and I particularly loved how they showcased the violence towards animals exhibited in children as something to take a closer examination of as it can lead to murdering people as well.

It’s all actually very well done and Daeg Faerch is quite memorable as the kid version of Myers. The adult Myers is also fine, but the kid is more memorable. I also liked the hospital sequences and everything in the second half was actually quite sophisticated, dramatic and very grounded in reality.

But the second half became your regular slasher flick with some realism, but ultimately it became too realistic and way too gory with not enough genuine suspense as the movie is just cold and violent without ever being properly scary in any way. It needed more memorable kills and a more suspenseful approach as it was too straightforward this way.

Rob Zombie’s Halloween was directed solidly, but not greatly. It needed more polish and its gritty realism ultimately came to its detriment as it’s never scary nor is it ever memorable in its set pieces which are too regular and uninspired.

I liked the dialogue, but the second half was all action and not memorable action in any way. I did like Malcolm McDowell as Samuel Loomis quite a bit and he fitted the role perfectly, but he needed more screen time. The other characters are uninspired and Laurie Strode herself is so much weaker than the original version. The cinematography and score are uninspired too.

Rob Zombie’s Halloween has an uninspired second half that remakes the original and is so much inferior in every way plus the horror elements are too gritty and gory without ever being truly suspenseful. But the first half actually acts as a very interesting, realistic origin story for Michael Myers and I bought the entirety of it as I found it very well done and quite dramatic leading to a flawed, but ultimately surprisingly solid entry in the franchise.

My Rating – 3.5
