Goofy Groceries (1941)
Goofy Groceries Review
Goofy Groceries is a 1941 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a visually appealing short.
Yes, the animation is by far the biggest selling point of Goofy Groceries as the film is otherwise only so-so in quality. It follows various food products coming to life and singing or fighting and is thus another one of those objects coming to life stories we haven’t seen in quite a while from this series. The food products all look very detailed, the backgrounds are fantastic and the film has a very polished touch to it as the colors are much smoother and more real than before.
But the plot itself is subpar and the film lacks in strong gags. The ape is annoying, but him being chastised by his mother was a fun twist. The bunny end gag is another racist moment with blackface which I saw coming from miles away. The songs are okay, but nothing too remarkable and the radio celebrity parodies are again overwhelming.
Goof Groceries has some good moments, but is otherwise a subpar Merry Melody which is admittedly gorgeously animated.
