Futurama Season 9 (2024)

Futurama Season 9 Review
The ninth season of Futurama premiered in 2024. It’s one of weakest seasons of this show yet. It has its strengths, but it’s overall forgettable.
The One Amigo is one of the worst episodes here and not a good way to open the season at all. We’ve seen Bender in Mexico before, so none of that was new. The NFT storyline was tiresome and I would personally like more from Futurama to not be so timely and go the timeless route instead.

The Quids Game fared much better. The Planet Express crew and their friends celebrate Fry’s birthday while surviving the world of games in what is a very imaginative episode that was predictable in its final twist, but it largely worked due to memorably twisted games and those very amusing aliens.
The Temp is this rather odd episode that features a very interesting concept well explored. The creepiness factor was quite intriguing and this is one of the most creative episodes in this bunch. I liked the character introduced here too as he was menacing, but well realized. I just wished that it had more humor as it was too dramatic.
Beauty and the Bug is a rather forgettable episode that is serviceable and not bad at all, but this season was not one of Bender’s best at all. Most of his storylines here were pedestrian, though some of his lines here did work. One Is Silicon and the Other Gold is a fine Leela showcase that is more fun than expected for a female-centric episode. It’s great, but it has its moments.

Now we come to the two best episodes of Season 9. The first one is Attack of the Clothes. I absolutely loved it. This is a return to form for Futurama as it showcases everything that is great about this show – irreverent and silly pop-culture references, strong dialogue, solid character arcs and fine commentary. The series tackling fashion was an interesting bent and clearly the Professor stole the show. His campy looks made me laugh out loud throughout.
Planet Espresso is the other standout. Hermes has rarely gotten a better storyline and I loved what they did with his character. His tumultuous relationship with his father is well explored while the whole coffee plot was brilliantly silly and creative at the same time. It’s one of the most purely imaginative and delightful episodes, the kind that we got to see much more often before.
Cuteness Overlord is a good one. The cute toys being creepy is a familiar idea, but one that was well executed here. The highlights were Amy and Kif. The best joke was the one that poked fun at Bart Simpson’s design. The Futurama Mystery Liberry is not as terrible as the last season’s three-parter, but it’s still very mediocre. The Tintin segment appealed to me as a big fan of that IP, but the other two stories were dull and stupid. It’s such an uninspired mess. Otherwise is more moving than funny, but I found it to bet too emotionally manipulative and overly concerned with the multiverse concept. It’s a passable, but uninteresting finale.

The ninth season of Futurama is solid, but mostly forgettable. It got a couple of stellar, imaginative episodes, but most of the others range from solid to downright mediocre. Some characters got their moments to shine, but most did not. This season was at its best when it was more timeless in its approach and at its worst when it was trying to be timely.
Worst Episodes: The One Amigo and The Futurama Mystery Liberry.
Best Episodes: Attack of the Clothes and Planet Espresso.
