Fresh Hare (1942)
Fresh Hare Review
Fresh Hare is a 1942 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty strong, but uneven flick.
This is another Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd cartoon and it’s definitely not one of my favorites. That’s not to say that it’s weak as it’s certainly pretty good, it’s just that the movie is quite uneven in terms of the pacing particularly as some scenes are overlong and some are rushed. The structure is also odd and the short felt like too many wildly different parts stuck together in one film.
But the animation and score continue to be strong and the humor is pretty good. I really liked that ridiculous ending, but another highlight includes Bugs undressing Elmer in what is surely a hilarious, brave scene for its time. Bugs is excellent here and very energetic, but Elmer is also pretty good and unfortunately this is his last fat appearance and I’m sad to see this version go as I really like it personally.
Fresh Hare definitely is uneven and wildly different in its parts, but it has some gems of scenes and both characters are terrific in it.
