Fresh Airedale (1945)
Fresh Airedale Review
Fresh Airedale is a 1945 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a weaker entry.
In his master’s eyes, “good old Shep” is the perfect dog, but the cat knows he’s really a two-faced mutt who can be bought off with a bone by a burglar so her tries to set him up but fails every single time. I loved the cat character quite a bit and the dog was also quite endearing. The cat steals the show with his frustrations which lead to the best scenes in the flick.
However, this film is just way too typical in its depiction of cats being manipulative and dogs being great buddies. I also found the animation and the score only serviceable. As for the action and humor, they’re okay, but not particularly exciting and the whole film felt too old-fashioned for my personal liking.
Fresh Airedale has its moments and solid characters, but it’s overall just another stereotypical dog and cat cartoon.
