Freaky Movie Review
Freaky is a 2020 horror comedy film directed by Christopher Landon and starring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton. It’s a hugely entertaining flick.

“You’re black! I’m gay!
We are so dead!“

It is about a teenage girl who unintentionally switches bodies with a middle-aged male serial killer. She has only a day to reverse this before the change becomes permanent. A lot of shenanigans then ensue and I was having a blast from start to finish. This is one of those silly movies where you can easily forgive its ludicrousness and just enjoy the craziness at display.
It’s a horror comedy, but it’s not all that creepy. Maybe the beginning is, but it’s more the case of a perfectly executed, fun 80s slasher homage than a purely scary horror scene. Afterward, it turns to pure comedy and the humor is mostly very good. Again, it’s a simple and stupid movie, but it works because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Yes, some of the situations and scenarios are overdone, the ending in particular, but most are entertaining and well executed.
Vince Vaughn is the star of this picture. Never has he been this funny. He was thoroughly believable as this teenage girl trapped in an older male body and all his mannerisms and facial expressions are so good and hilarious. He had a lot of fun in the role and it shows.
Freaky also benefits from a very good Kathryn Newton turn. Though less memorable, she sold the serial killer vibes and she was cool and quite creepy. I also really liked the two friends of Millie. Yes, they are stereotypically the gay friend and the black friend, but their dynamic is fun and their friendship is wonderful.

Freaky has some similarities to ‘Happy Death Day’, a movie also directed by Christopher Landon. Especially is that evident in the gimmicky nature of this plot. Yes, it’s very gimmicky and showy, but again it mostly works, even if the third act is a bit messy. The second act is the best one as it had the best humor while the beginning homages the eighties and features some very fun kills. The score is very good, but the pacing could have been better.
