Fox Pop (1942)
Fox Pop Review
Fox Pop is a 1942 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is such a terrific flick.
This is the type of well told, amusing story that the later Merry Melodies and some of the earlier ones are known for and I expect more of this quality from the studio. A red fox hears on the radio that people like foxes, but misinterprets that they want them for skin, purposely traps himself painted as a silver fox and it takes him quite a while to realize the humans’ true intentions.
Yes, this is a very strong story very well told with brisk pace and particularly effective humor. It could have been even funnier, but most of the gags really worked with the dogs at the end being quite funny and the entire beginning is the ending concept worked stupendously here. I would have made those prison break sequences a bit differently, but most of the cartoon worked incredibly well nonetheless. The animation is also excellent as is the protagonist who’s very well realized and quite memorable.
Fox Pop features a killer premise, a couple of terrific gags, good animation and a fantastic, well developed main character.
