Flop Goes the Weasel (1943)
Flop Goes the Weasel Review
Flop Goes the Weasel is a 1943 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty solid short.
A weasel steals an egg from the mother hen, it hatches and mistakes it for his mother. Eventually, the chick outsmarts and beats the weasel and then returning to his mother. There are some very big issues I’ve had with this film. One is the pacing and runtime. It’s an overly, unnecessarily long film which in the middle definitely padded a bit in pace. The other problem is that it’s never as funny as it should have been given the classic premise.
But still, the chick is hilarious with his “Mammy!” exclamations. Although a black stereotype, it still works because the character is quite endearing and badass at the same time. The weasel is also a lot of fun and I really liked the dynamic between the two. The animation is not particularly great this time around, but the character design is excellent.
Flop Goes the Weasel definitely has its pacing issues, but it’s a very amusing short with endearing characters and memorable interactions between them.
