Fish Fry (1944)
Fish Fry Review
Fish Fry is a 1944 animated short film directed by Walter Lantz. It is quite a weak cartoon.
This film is supposed to belong in the Andy Panda series, but he appears so briefly that it was ridiculous. He’s the one who sells the fish to this cat who wants to eat him and the rest of the cartoon is him trying to eat the fish. Needless to say, we’ve seen this type of cartoon hundreds of times before.
What works here is the character of the cat who is a lot of fun and genuinely crazy in some scenes. He’s the only memorable character here with the fish and the dog themselves being very forgettable. The animation itself is cute, but the action left a lot to be desired in terms of originality.
Fish Fry is well animated and solid in the cat character, but otherwise bland, unoriginal and entirely undeserving of its Oscar nomination.
