Falling Hare (1943)
Falling Hare Review
Falling Hare is a 1943 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty good, but still problematic short.
Bugs Bunny is seen next to a bomber plane and he reads about gremlins and how they destroy planes. He doesn’t believe it, but then he comes into contact with it as one of them tries to destroy the plane where he’s at. And then we get a series of gags where the gremlin makes fun of Bugs and even knocks him in the head a couple of times.
And there lies my problem with this film. On the one hand, seeing Bugs for once get humiliated was interesting and quite different. But on the other hand, it was just too much, too different and simply not going well with his conniving personality. I still liked that gremlin and Bugs has his amusing moments here, but he was punched a bit too much for my personal liking. The action and animation are fine though, the premise is unique and the ending is a lot of fun.
Falling Hare is a very original short in premise and in execution, but seeing Bugs humiliated was, although authentic, still overly weird and not good for him.
